Aftermarket Upgrades: New Process Equipment Benefits at Half the Cost

Better...faster...cheaper.  These three factors drive the movement toward locating, upgrading or refurbishing aftermarket equipment.  Companies around the world have always explored better ways to do what they do.  In most cases, no matter what their budgets may be, they would also like to do it cheaper without compromising quality or efficiency.

For any number of reasons, companies may need to acquire new equipment such as a dryer, calciner or other type of powder & bulk material processor.  In some cases, we see customers whose current equipment is no longer reliable and needs costly repair.  In other instances, a customer may want to reap the benefits of the latest technological advances, allowing them to increase efficiency and savings.  Other customers simply need a replacement part, but they will save in the long run by upgrading instead of simply replacing an identical part.

No matter the scenario, our customers find that a new equipment purchase is not the only recommendation they get from Heyl & Patterson.  Locating, inspecting and upgrading aftermarket equipment is becoming the solution of choice for those who make equipment purchases.  Aside from the incredible cost savings, often more than 50%, they cite the following reasons for upgrading aftermarket equipment rather than purchasing it new:

It allows them to practice a form of recycling. It prevents the waste of equipment and resources. It allows them to benefit from advances in technology that they otherwise could not afford. At Heyl & Patterson, upgrading and refurbishing used equipment for high performance is a three-step process.  The first step, locating, may seem like the biggest challenge.  The next steps, inspecting and testing, are absolutely essential.  In most cases, the upgrade or refurbishment will still take less time than starting from scratch and fabricating new equipment.

First, a company wanting to upgrade must locate an existing piece of equipment to work with.  In many cases, they may already own the equipment and need to look no further.  Other times, they may know of equipment that is for sale.  If not, they conduct a search for available equipment, often with assistance from Heyl & Patterson.

It is important to note that Heyl & Patterson will perform upgrades and refurbishments to aftermarket equipment regardless of the original manufacturer.

No matter where the equipment comes from, the second step involves inspecting the equipment to make sure it is capable of meeting production needs.  At Heyl & Patterson, we conduct a comprehensive field inspection that includes a full report detailing upgraded capabilities, the acssociated costs with each upgrade, and a recommendation to make the purchase or not.

The third step, laboratory testing, ensures that the aftermarket piece is capable of the required processing task.  During this process, Heyl & Patterson lab technicians run tests on the customer's product to determine how it needs to be processed.  These results, combined with the specifications of the piece of machinery, allow us to determine if the upgraded equipment will be technically capable of doing the job.  In this stage, we investigate if the upgraded equipment can:

Provide necessary throughput Reach optimal temperatures Offer full control over the process Ensure material integrity If the equipment does not meet the above standards, it is not worthy of an upgrade.  Instead, we evaluate other options.
